O'Neil tried out for her third series of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while at high school. The judges were impressed with her singing and she advanced into the Top 100 Round. O'Neil received high praise from the jury. However, she was a major loser in both the Top 10 Week as well as the Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were surprised by her performance and advised viewers to choose those who sing well, such as Melissa. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she never placed in the lower three in the future. After two more breathtaking performances on the 7th of September 2005, as O'Neil and Rex Goudie advanced to the competition's final two, the judge Werner said that newspapers in the early morning were going to read O'Neil defeated Goudie to win the title of third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and also the most youthful winner in the competition's record . O'Neil received a call shortly after her win from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
